Umbilical cord blood (UCB) has some hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells. UCB is an outstanding source for hematopoietic stem cells transplantation. Practically speaking, it is easier and safer than bone marrow transplantation. UCB has been proven to have some neurotrophic effects that seem to be due to its mononuclear cellular content (monocytes, basophiles, etc.); not due to its stem cell content. In addition, UCB has many neurotrophic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), etc. Therefore, umbilical cord blood can be used to enhance neural repair and regeneration.
